the brief
a ‘love you but goodbye’ to gordon’s first wife Leanne, the bookend to Proposal — and the first song in the karosongs ‘karma track’
Bluebirds, the 7th karosong to start channeling, started by playing around on the guitar, 'finding' a chord (A minor 7) with an airy ringing quality I really loved, then 'finding' a chord sequence around it. (Meaning the energies pounded on my fingers until they did whatever was wanted.)
At first, it seemed this new song wouldn't be autobiographical since the relationship described in the opening lyrics did not exist in my life.
So we went up to Frisco
'n down through the streets
searching for that place where
we first found our love.
And there on a corner at the edge
of night, under a tree, beneath a light
we stopped. . .
to listen to a bluebird sing. . .
That lasted until the third verse where the big reveal (to me) was that the song was about my first wife Leanne. Then the fourth verse revealed that she and I were soulmates, “sailing on the winds of eternity” and that the song was actually my goodbye to her until we met again. Like some earlier songs, there was no chorus per se but a 'chorus form' that changed with each verse.
bruce and leanne
it's your destiny
to walk upon the stars
the path to love
but there's nothing says
it will be easy
and there's nothing says
it will be fun
fact there's nothing even says
it can be done
(In case you're wondering who bruce is, well that's my actual first name, the name I was using at that point in my life.)
soul mates, yeah that's what we are
bluebirds on the winds of eternity
our task to live and learn through living
our joy to find some lifetime
we'll be together again
to try it again
Laying the spokesong version of Bluebirds against Yanni's With an Orchid, I had the sense much of the song would remain spokesong in the 2.0 version. In fact, about two thirds remained spokesong.
The lyrics stayed mostly the same, with a minor few nips/tucks until the end, where the original extro was expanded to include a final throwaway line that “besides, she'd sue”. To me, that line comes straight from funi-karo. (And everytime I deliver it, I can almost hear Leanne chortling at it.)
Bluebirds was also the first song I felt to acknowledge the band in the opening credits, in this case Yanni's incredible orchestra. This became a recurring feature of the opening credits whenever there was time in the async track.
and I wouldn't sell it for a million bucks
and I wouldn't swap it for a hundred rollers
fact I wouldn't trade it for all the tea in china
and that's a lot
i should know. i lived there. Yeah i did.
that’s where we actually met
but that’s a whole other story.
Besides she'd sue!
She'd sue my lying ass.
Post-script
Bluebirds was the second song channeled for my first wife Leanne. It was also the start of what I came to call "the karma track", a series of songs and/or themes exploring the action of karma in our lives, that reached a peak with The phoenix must burn 3.3 in 2021.
Over the years, I have abandoned the popular notion of soulmates and all the romantic baggage it carries in favour of the term 'karma partners' as a more accurate description of the relationship.

an all-original 1.0 karosong

so we went up to Frisco
and down through the streets
searching for that place where
we first found our love.
and there on a corner at the edge
of night, under a tree, beneath a light
we stopped . . .
to listen to a bluebird sing
what sounded like
love hurts love hurts
it's sad but it's true
love opens to the fear inside
and no matter how many times
we listened to that song
and no matter how many times
we said that's wrong
and no matter how many times
we swore our love made us strong. . .
it was no avail
-- 2 --
you see there was something about that tune
something in the notes that gave us pause
something touched so deeply as we
stood there
and memories came floating back, memories of the pain
love engendered, and yes,
looking back. . .
love hurt. it was sad but true. love
opens to the child inside.
and wouldn't you know it
that child is alone
and wouldn't you know it
that child is afraid
and wouldn't you know it
that child reaches for love
to no avail.
-- 3 --
so it was that you and i
all those years together
all those years together
that we lived apart
afraid to reach
afraid to touch
afraid to answer to the love
that was calling our names
bruce and leanne
it's your destiny
to walk upon the stars
the path to love
but there's nothing says
it will be easy
and there's nothing says
it will be fun

soul mates, yeah that's what we are
sailing on the winds of eternity
our task to live
and learn through living
our joy to find that some lifetime
we'll be together again
to try it again
until then, yeah babe
love hurts yeah it's sad but true
that it's pain opens the doors to love
and I wouldn't sell it
for a million bucks
and I wouldn't swap it
for a hundred rollers
and I wouldn't trade it
for all the tea in china
and that's a lot.
yeah yeah i should know. i lived there.

there's an nda. she'd sue.
she'd sue my lying ass.

Bluebirds 1.0 was the 7th karosong to start channeling, and one of the two all-original songs arranged by and recorded with my good friend Jeremy Sagar on Easter weekend, 1994.
Sadly, the demo I made for Jeremy to work from was lost, and the only other recording I have from the 1.0 period is incomplete.
arc01 / incomplete 1.0 version — late December 1989 [6]
arc03 / 1.0 studio version with Jeremy Sagar — Easter, 1994 [9]
Jeremy and I recorded the version above late into the night. We were doing 'punchins' towards the end of the session, trying to coax the best singing out of me. Neither of us noticed that I sang the first chorus form when we were punching in on the second chorus form. We only discovered the mistake after Jeremy had mixed the track down so it remains uncorrected here.
The first pass at laying out the 1.0 lyrics against Yanni's With an Orchid seemed to work overall, but the spokesong finished before the music. But as the song developed, the later lyrics shifted towards the end of the track so they finished with the music.
arc01 / spokesong (mixed) — April 27, 2011 [7]
Bluebirds was the third 1.0 song to be reversioned into a 2.0 karosong (after Transformation and It was a gift). There's only one mix of the song from this period.
arc02 / early 2.0 release — May 2016 [8]
In the period between the second and third phases, I started working on 'duets' with my younger self on the three 1.0 recordings. These 'then and now' duets are classified as 1.6 versions.
It's a bit of a kludge, but in this 1.6 version, I sing the correct second chorus form over the first chorus form sang by my younger self, as well as a couple of other small lyric updates.
arc01 / 1.6 'duet' version — circa 2016 [6]
I then didn't make many recordings of this song until 2021 when I returned to it to bring it into the whole/full karo vox. It was one of the easiest 2.0 to remaster.
arc03 / 'remastered' in whole/full karo vox — October 2021 [7+]
The song continued to improve as the whole/full/on karo emerged even stronger the following year and during the Vancouver sessions.
arc04 / whole/full/on karo vox — Vancouver mid February 2023 [8-]
