the brief

a hopeful, even joyful reaching out to the future, from the dark middle of the past ending

The spring and early summer of 2017 was a difficult period. My wife and I were separating after 24 years, and the future was uncertain but felt bleak and lonely. I was filled with fear — over where and how I'd live, how I'd cope financially, and that I would be alone, without a partner for the remainder of my life.

I was channeling The rain must fall at the time, and by early July was already aware of how that song was actively processing my emotions around the marriage ending and leading me towards acceptance. It was the first karosong to operate in the present.

In early July, it was followed by the first karosong to also operate in the future.

i don't know when or where or how we'll meet
i don't know how you'll look, how you'll talk
i don't know how your eyes will come to twinkle
when you think about me

It was a promise. To me. That there would be a future. That I would not forever be alone. That there would someday be joy and love in my life. It was literally a song For my new lover featuring Yanni's A Walk in the Rain.

i don't know
what we'll do our first date
where we'll first go to bed
how we'll first make love
but what I do know is it will be magic
it will be that boundless time of new love
that eternity within infinity
that timeless joy
and we should make the most of it so
when we meet. . .

It was the 26th karosong to start channeling, the 11th straight asynchronous collaboration with Yanni's brilliance, and the 2nd to fuse the async track's title into the lyrics.

let's take a walk in the rain
let's take a boat in the fog
let's take the time to enjoy this new love
let's have the time yeah the time of our lives
let’s let go and lose track of time. . .

Most of the song's three verse / chorus structure was easy to grasp, and the narrative thrust for the 2nd and 3rd verses was 'just there' even though the actual lyrics took a few months to clarify.

of course i know new love is ephemeral
it gives way to the routine, the comfort
i know that and accept that
even possibly maybe hope for it with you
if we last, but that means that
when we meet is the time to be free of time
when we meet is the time for the timeless

The challenge was mastering the delivery. The verses were largely spokesong with a shift towards singing for the choruses, and an even bigger shift into singing for the bridge from the 2nd verse into the chorus. (Just that bridge took several months to figure out.)

like squirrels storing nuts for the winter
we'll bury our memories in layers
for those long cold nights
like squirrels storing nuts for the winter
we'll remember where every morsel was hidden
for safekeeping to go back there
so when we meet. . .

The further I got into the song, the stronger my sense that it was not just a promise for the future. But that, like The rain must fall, it was guiding, encouraging me through the present.

well that's all for now
i just wanted to reach out, touch base
let you know i'm waiting and
so looking forward to meeting you
so hungry and wet for that stab of recognition
when i know it's you
and we can finally get on with it
yeah . . . that's gonna be fun

Post-script

To the start of the 4.1 set, the promise of the song remains just that, a promise for the future. No partner has appeared. No lover has opened my heart to the magic and joy of new love the song describes. But I'm okay with that. My fears about being alone have long dissipated and I've even found that I enjoy being on my own.

Perhaps one day the promise will come to pass. If and when, I will sing this song with ever more gratitude and joy.

For my new lover channeled during the period my home studio equipment was packed up and in storage. So there are no recordings from the main period the song was channeling.

arc02 / first 'release' — July 13, 2019 [7]

While the lyrics were complete, the song wasn't fully mastered during the active channeling period. It still needed work once I'd started recording again in April 2019, but was more or less mastered by that September.

arc03 / mastered — mid September 2019 [8]

I went back to this song during the summer and fall of 2021, wanting to bring it into the whole/full karo vox. I was getting close when I had to shut the house and recording studio down for the winter.

arc04 / current — late October 2021 [7]

For my new lover 3.1 is an original vocal karosong created in asynchronous collaboration with the recorded instrumental song A Walk in the Rain by Yanni.

In this context, For my new lover 3.1 and A Walk in the Rain are independent yet interdependent works. Each copyright holder reserves all rights to their respective materials. The songs however can be licensed together.
