the brief
the first eponymous collaboration, and touching affirmation of a joyous life together
Not all karosongs are a struggle. Some, especially rom-flavour songs, come easy and come 'quickly,' in just a week or three, versus months and years.
There were three of these in the 3.1 set, including this one which shares its name and theme with Yanni's ever-so-sensual In the Morning Light.
woke up before you this morning
got coffee then sat watching you sleep
watching how the morning light worked art
across your sleeping form
picasso and rembrandt were jealous
It was the 32nd karosong to start channeling, the last in the 3.1 set, and the 13th asynchronous collaboration with music by Yanni.
The lyrics came in just a few weeks, their delivery within a month. (Well most of their delivery. There were some small bits of singing I couldn't and didn't get until I returned to my home studio the year after; one bit that took still another year.)
I loved singing this song. It was gentle, full of joy and spoke to the magic of love, that most familiar yet ineffable human experience.
i love to see you in the morning light
i love to be with you in the magic night
i love to feel your heart running through my days
there's no where i'd rather be
It wasn't autobiographical per se, not about any one person in particular. It was just about the feelings. A topic it seems rom-flavour karosongs are good at.
you are my dreams come true
you are my fervent hopes
you are my fondest wish
my greatest joy
you fill and fulfil me
lift and uplift me
best of all . . .
Well, there was one autobiographical note came out in the lyrics — call it a wistful longing for something I had never experienced. Full acceptance of myself, my music and my inner depths by my partner.
you accept me as we are
you accept our several me
love us all
share your love with us all
But as soon as I recognized the feeling in myself, sas* reared its ugly head and I saw that it really applied to all relationships. There are always parts to ourselves that our partners, friends, family don't accept. There are always parts to our partners, friends and family that we don't accept.
Hell. There are parts to our own selves that we don't accept. It's just in the nature of being human.
Even with the sudden dose of sas, it was a short but sweet song; just two verses, two choruses and an outgoing refrain. But riding on Yanni's flowing piano, it packed in a huge amount of imagery and emotions. It is still one of my favourites to sing.
but even if our love does fade
I’m sure like the beauty of a wilting flower
it will be into the warm glow of memory
this golden flow of morning light
i love to see you in the morning light
i love to be with you in the magic night
i love to feel your heart running through my days
there's no where i'd rather be
* sas — self awareness shit, gordon's pet name for a pushy little bugger.
Post-script
When I first channeled this song, I miscounted it as the 30th karosong, and the opening credits at the time reflected that. The count was corrected to the 32nd after a review of notes and files during the development of this archive.

In the morning light
a 3.1 karosong
and the 13th asynchronous collaboration
with music by Yanni
in this case of the same name
— 1 —
woke up before you this morning
got coffee then sat watching you sleep
watching how the morning light worked art
across your sleeping form
picasso and rembrandt were jealous
and i thought how fortunate i am
to have that view, share creation of that art
sunny mornings you sleep in
and how fortunate i am to be loved by you
loved by you my true blue
yeah, my true blue
i love to see you in the morning light
i love to be with you in the magic night
i love to feel your heart running through my days
there's no where i'd rather be
than here with you
— 2 —
you are my dreams come true
you are my fervent hopes
you are my fondest wish
my greatest joy
you fill and fulfil me
lift and uplift me
best of all
you accept me as we are
you accept our several me
love us all
share your love with me all
there's some say love endures but beauty disappears
but i say when there's love there's only beauty
of course we'll age, of course we'll change
but i hope and trust, yes hope and trust
that beauty will always remain
and i hope we always share it
but even if our love does fade . . .
i’m sure that like the beauty of a wilting flower
it will be into the warm glow of memory
this golden flow of morning light
i love to see you in the morning light
i love to be with you in the magic night
i love to feel my heart running through your days
there's no where i'd rather be
than here with you
. . . refrain out there's no where no where i'd rather be
than here with you
there's no where no where i'd rather be
than here with you
there's no where no where i'd rather be
than here with you

This was the last song to start channeling in the 3.1 set, but it had mostly finished channeling before I resumed recording in the spring of 2019. It was one of the first in this set to be mastered well enough to mix for a 'release'.
arc01 / first 'release' — June 23, 2019 [7]
The opening credits in this version were corrected during the development of this archive. This was the 32nd, not the 30th karosong.
Although this was a 'signature' song for the 3.1 set, there were not many mixes output. This recording from the spring of 2021 includes the updated opening credits.
arc03 / post sub-vocal winter — late April 2021 [8]
By that November, this song had also shifted into the whole/full karo vox.
arc04 / whole/full vox — mid November 2021 [7+]
Once a song has been mastered, it goes on a maintenance schedule to keep it in memory and current with gordon's evolving voice. The current best version featured in the main song player is this recording from the early Vancouver sessions when the performer — the full-on karo — was consolidating its presence in the mix.
arc05 / whole/full/on vox — early January 2023 [8]
